The Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin, established in 1996, is one of Galicia’s most distinctive wine regions and one of the leading references of what is known as heroic viticulture. It stretches across the south of the province of Lugo and the north of Ourense, embracing the breathtaking canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers. Their dramatic, near-vertical slopes support vineyards planted on terraces that seem to defy gravity—maintained through centuries of dedicated human effort.
The D.O. is divided into five subzones: Amandi, Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras do Miño, and Ribeiras do Sil. Each has its own unique characteristics, yet all share a common identity: wines born from an extraordinary landscape and a centuries-old tradition.
Vía Romana belongs to the Chantada subzone, one of the greenest, most Atlantic-influenced, and well-balanced areas of Ribeira Sacra.
Our winery is located in Belesar, a privileged enclave on the banks of the Miño River, which acts as a natural regulator, creating a mild microclimate that allows for perfect grape ripening.
For us, the Miño is more than a river: it is landscape, history, and an essential part of the character of our wines.
Ribeira Sacra is one of the finest examples of heroic viticulture in the world, with vineyards planted on steep slopes, divided into small plots and terraces built since Roman times.
Here, work cannot be mechanized:
harvesting is done by hand, access is via narrow paths and sometimes even by river, and every crate carried down from the vineyard is a testament to dedication.
This effort results in wines with a distinctive personality and an unmistakable character.
The D.O. protects and promotes traditional Galician grape varieties. The most representative and those used by Vía Romana are:
Preferred red varieties:
Mencía (the queen of the region)
Brancellao
White varieties:
Godello
Ribeira Sacra reds are known for their freshness, vibrant red fruit, and elegance, while the whites stand out for their finesse and aromatic character..
Ribeira Sacra is a magical territory where nature, heritage, and wine come together. Romanesque monasteries, native forests, river routes, and breathtaking viewpoints enrich the wine tourism experience.
From Belesar, Vía Romana invites you to experience Ribeira Sacra with all your senses:
walk, feel, taste… without hurry.
