Varietal: Mencía; this variety produces small compact bunches with medium sized berries of thick skin. The red wines elaborated with the Mencía grapes are scented and fruity, with an intense color. The Mencía variety is also characterized by its ageing capacity, with a distinctive velvety palate. In addition this variety presents optimal conditions for the elaboration of young wines.
VIA ROMANA:
“…stone pathways built with the work of a thousand hands; pathways of pain and punishment, but also of culture. Ways that opened an unknown world, the only possible world – Rome and its vast empire.
Traces of a time gone by; to its glory, to our land, and to our people we pay tribute by means of the fruit of our vineyards’ heart.”
The green pruning of the vineyard, the manual selection of bunches, the entering of the grapes into the deposit by means of gravity, the six-month-long quietness and silence of the winery, make the Vía Romana a unique Ribeira Sacra which shows the way of top quality.
Every year we elaborate the vintage wine which is put into the market in the last quarter of the year, and is presented in two forms - 75cl and 50 cl.
In years with different qualities, we elaborate our vintage year selection wine, which remains at controlled temperature for at least 2 years, it is bottled in 1.5-littre Mágnum bottles, and it is put into the market after having completed a second 6-month storage period.
The Winery is currently elaborating its first wine kept in French oak casks – this product will be go on the market in 2008.
Comments on the Wine: Vía Romana takes out the essence of the Mencía grape, an autochthonous variety in this zone, with a fruity aroma and a good alcoholic dose, which results in an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.
Cherry-red coloured, with violet edges, it presents sound and intense varietal aromas; vegetables, fresh red fruit, black pepper, juniper berries, cherries.
